NYC will now regulate pedicabs
February 28, 2007
Eyewitness News
(New York - WABC) - New York City Council wants to slam the brakes
on the pedicab industry before it spins out of control.
The council created a licensing and safety standards on Wednesday
and capped the number of pedicabs allowed on the streets to
325.
The cabs, which look like giant tricycles with passenger carriages
in the back, are popular with tourists and some residents.
But as pedicabs have become more popular, particularly in busy
tourist areas, some critics say they cause traffic jams as they
troll for customers.
Pedicabs have rolled around the city for years without any
regulation, unlike yellow taxis, horse-drawn carriages and other
vehicles for hire.
